At Lokichoggio Emuriakin Development Organization (LEDO), our commitment to sustainability extends to our Social Enterprises Pillar. These income-generating activities play a pivotal role in our mission, providing financial independence and supporting the organization’s various initiatives.
Supporting Sustainable Change
LEDO’s Social Enterprises Pillar embodies our commitment to sustainable change. By engaging in these income-generating activities, we not only secure financial independence but also create lasting impacts on education, nutrition, and economic development within the Lokichoggio community.
Generating Impactful Income: The HE School, operating under the Social Enterprises Pillar, generates income through school fees paid by learners from PP1 to grade 8. Beyond tuition, the school provides additional services, including hall and public address hire from the community members. This multifaceted approach ensures a steady stream of revenue while offering valuable services to the community.
Empowering Communities Through Poultry: LEDO’s Poultry Project is designed not only to generate income but also to enhance the nutrition of vulnerable children and the entire community. With a focus on sustainability, the project aims to train young people, women, and other vulnerable community members in entrepreneurial skills. The project is executed by a dedicated team comprising the manager and two breeding technicians, both trained personnel on poultry farming.
Market Dynamics: Poultry farming serves as a viable alternative to red meat consumption, especially in a pastoralist community. The efficient feed conversion of poultry makes it a cost-effective protein source. The primary market for poultry products includes Hannah Emuriakin Primary School, where the school purchases chickens consumed by learners. Additionally, community members, hotels, restaurants, and recreational facilities in and around Lokichoggio contribute to the market for the poultry project.
Nutrition and Income Source: LEDO’s commitment to providing nutrition and income is evident in the Farming and Greenhouse Project. Located at Hannah Emuriakin School, the project operates two greenhouses growing a variety of crops, including sukuma, sukuma wiki, tomatoes, Capsicum, local vegetables, spinach, cabbage, and pepper. The majority of the produce is supplied to the school, with surplus sold to community members.
Crafting Quality Furniture: The Loki KEA Desk project, another integral part of our income- generating activities, operates within the LEDO workshop. The project specializes in crafting permanent desks for schools, beds, chairs, metal boxes, and handling various metal repairs. Initially priced at Ksh.7,500, the current pricing reflects adjustments due to increased material costs.
Market Reach: The major market for Loki KEA desks extends beyond local schools, reaching even schools located in South Sudan. The project not only generates income for LEDO but also contributes to educational environments with quality furniture.
